"My Oosterom journey began in the lockdown fog of 2021. I was pregnant with my first child, working in film as a machinist and needed a creative outlet."
Meet Nicole
I remember our first photoshoot was on a West Coast beach in the middle of winter. Pregnant, soaked socks and covered in black sand. The brand has been organically growing over the past three years, and I'm so excited to bring the label to Hamilton at Found Store!
Hi Nicole! Tell us a bit about your background prior to Oosterom
"I was always obsessed with crafting and making while growing up. My Oma, Pietje van Oosterom (hence the brand name) was a machinist for Bendon and had a cupboard full of crafts which my sisters and I would get stuck into everytime we visited. After graduating from Whitecliffe with a degree majoring in fashion Design in 2014, I worked in the fashion industry as a menswear designer and then a production manager for Ingrid Starnes."
Tell us about the brands identity, who is the Oosterom woman?
"Oosterom is for women who appreciate craft, desire effortlessness and look for a timeless wardrobe. I think subconsciously I'm designing for a Parisian woman living in Japan. Think elegant classic details, tangible textures with a twist of volume and unexpected moodiness. The Oosterom woman is whoever she wants to be, there are no rules."
What is your favourite part of the design process? Where do you seek your references?
"Fabric sourcing heavily influences my design process. I'm always in search of natural fibres, unique textures and often work with limited edition deadstock fabrics. References, specifically construction techniques, often stem from my love of vintage clothing. I spend as much time focusing on the beauty of the inside of a garment as the outside. Coming from a menswear background, I also love classic tailoring with a hint of feminism, whether its unexpected gathering or rounded volume. I think the Oosterom silhouette defines the brand."
"The sleeve design in particular stems from my own wedding dress, so is rather dear to my heart.
What is your favourite piece in the collection?
The Penelope Blouse has been an all time favourite. Once of the first ever pieces I designed for the brand (we shot this one on that West Coast beach back in 2021). It goes to show that good design is timeless, statement pieces can be worked into an everyday wardrobe and individual styling is what brings out the personality and mood of the wearer."
